The Secret

I was wishing
for the long summer twilight time
and the moon falling into the sea
and you and me with toes dangling
into the sureness of a youthful frolic.

But, it was no longer summer
and the air was quickly cooling
as I stood at the top of the mountain
counting the ridges
like rounded steps down,
down into a hazy sea,
thinking of all that was lost.

Then

across the hill
that fell away beside me
into a river
with alder tracing its
curving path
I found something,
perfect with its nudging truth
out of my longing,

I found Fall.

It was lit with sunshine
and covered in a coat
of many colors and textures,
then staked to the ground
by yucca spikes
that stood erect
in their blooming hold on death
and rebirth.

There was copper and rust,
burnt orange and umber,
all sown together by the plume
of the gray squirrels tail
that darted back and forth
like a living needle.

I could smell the creosote
where the fragrant ground leaked,
and sage in soft dusty green
gave reverence to the air
in a prayer for continuance
that I could hear echo
in my heart.

As I stood there
and felt like crying for something,
something that summer stole from me
and would not give back,
something that would never be the same again,
Fall covered me with her quilt
so that I would understand
how life changes for a reason
and time spreads
its seeds upon the ground to wait.

It whispered across the hill,
its breath as fragrant as
the sweet peas of early spring,

it whispered this secret to me,

now is really all there is,
and now it is Fall.

You know of which you write and you write so very well. I feel every emotion that this seeps into blue. Bless you tender heart so very much.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Only you Martie could have written the end of Summer
and the beginning of Fall so well...
only you, could touch all the senses.
The imagery, the sounds and scents..the emotions.

This is beautiful as are you
inside and out...
Love the picture!
Love you lady~

I'm so glad you reposted this.  There are so many great images you've captured.  Fall is not my fave season, because it augers winter, but you are right, Fall is now.  Hugs Ken

Martie,
Can't remember if I posted to this first time around. Doesn't matter anyway, what does, is that you chose to share it. Thanks.

Martie Very beautiful, but of course that is all that can possibly flow from you pen. I had to read this several times ( you don't have to be smart to be loveable:-) but I think I understand. Its about aging looking back and acceptance. And I think maybe unawares to you, it's about your own beauty and grace. :-)

Reposted with good reason, cuz it IS Fall!

Boy, does that look like a Southern Californian backdrop, or what??? You know, up here (in the North), they say "SoCal" which drives me nuts!

A lovely poem, kind of haunting and sad. it is a time when we morn what we've lost.

Thanks for reposting this!

And here's praying you haven't had those fires anywhere near you.

As I stood there....

Yes. Each word of this rings true.....but it's hard enough to know where people go, let alone the time they carry within them.

....and why is it that as the sand runs out, the sack feels heavier?

It is amazingly freeing to be able to accept what is even when it's different than what we thought we wanted.

Enjoyed this very much Martie.
