I got the phone call on my way to the hospital.
The doctor just came to see me Rob,
It’s not good news, his voice cracked on good….
good is not supposed to crack.
Brain cancer he sobbed. I was embarrassed,
I never heard my father cry.
My father is not supposed to cry
This huge man who made everything…..ok.
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, my new mantra.
Don’t worry dad , its going to be all right…..
I wanted to remind him of a better place,
the time we went to The Nile.
The two lane highway swallowed my car
a long black throat heading upwards towards the hospital.
I got there and saw him now with new eyes.
Never had he looked so small, lost, alone, scared, broken…inside
I went to my mom, she showed me a brave smile.
Who’s going to take care of your father Rob.
I just can’t do it anymore
Don’t worry Mom….it will be okay
And I started talking about the trip to the Nile.
She loved Egypt, she could even read hieroglyphics.
They were expecting their first grandchild in two months.
My brother’s wife had a new life metastasizing inside.
The cancer fed hungrily on the oxygen rich brain cells
like a fire lapping up the contents of a comfy home.
For the next 4 weeks there was laughter,
and everything was DELICIOUS, so kind….the cancer
It must have heightened the pleasure center of the brain.
The last two weeks…no talking, the fire raging.
She died after the sixth week.
She was right. There was no one to take care of my father.
He died a year later, they said prostate cancer….
I was never too good at biology,
but I know the prostate is not in the chest.
