Out Making Anticlines

boxer

there’s nowhere to fall
so she straightens,
squares herself again

the dull gloves gone heavy

refusing to show the pain,
give life the satisfaction
of another belly punch

remaining is her only victory

now it is almost revenge to her,
nearly defiance and is all
of something she won’t name

even butterflies fight

a change, anger in her eye
and a sudden definition:
this isn’t over; she has more

shed the gloves; bite the laces

she could dance then,
slip the worst of it with a twist
maybe she can dance still

touch the enemy with naked skin

there is no ending,
no bell, but there is time;
she will do this yet again

and do it knowing why

There, I said it right out in the open. I'd been holding off on this one because I thought it might tread on some oh-so-tender sensibilities in this group...but I just decided I don't care what those people might think.

There are women who fight day by day in the way a woman must, and they should be honored. You know the battles I mean, almost none involving boxing gloves, and the least of them of them taking a lot more grit than any fist fight.

even butterflies fight

VERY TRUE, James..

I really like this, I'm saving it to my library. I'm glad you shared it.

I envy her strength... to stay standing, no matter what. Sitting down and howling's been my norm lately. *S*

Your empathy and compassion are exceeded only by your immense talent. *S*
