Now they wash upon our Texan shores,
The remnants of what N’Orleans was,
Shoes, and tires, and searching matter
Looking for their former owners.

The haunting of catastrophe
Is there reminding us to see
It is a time to think as one
To open eyes, not to shun

The poor, the elder, helpless;
It is a time for selflessness.
Rita comes, lest we forgot
We always get what we beget.

Jo, what an image this brings! the flotsam and jetsom of New Orleans co-mingling with that of Galveston and Houston.
Hope you've battened down all the hatches, lady! I'll be thinking of you, keeping my fingers crossed.

Keep save. I'm glued to the boob tube with my fingers crossed and prayers being sent for Rita to continue to be down-graded.

This is written with your heart, dear Jo, and I am so sorry to hear Rita is affecting your area!
Your words are powerful and you give such wise advice … may we all awaken to the truth of being One …

May you all be safe … may the storm dissolve before hitting land …

Love and hugs.

Thinking of you and all in Rita's path. Just saw on the news the bus explosion carrying the elderly. Tragic sadness.

Be safe ... hugs, Marti

My special poetic friends.....thank you for your comments and care.  We are still here this morning waiting.  At this point, my hubby is saying..."if we leave, where will we go?"  He has a point.  We would head west, but "then what," he says.  At the moment, we are on the far end of the projected clean side of the storm....so we are leaning toward staying to try to prevent flooding which will occur in our atrium and leak into the house (as it always does when it rains) -- we are not expecting flooding from the bayou as we lay just outside of the flood line....no, just the rain draining off the house into the atrium.  If the point changes where the hurricane is projected to hit land putting us on the wrong side of the storm, or if it picks up speed .... or well, a number of things could change, but if we aren't out of here by noon or so....we will be better off to stay.  Most of our neighbors are still here, too.

Sy, I will keep your family in my prayers.   ....jo

from the vantage point of a drydocked rental here in Oregon, I would say stay
so if you choose to "weather the storm"
I can send some sponges and towels to help you dry out that atrium
~thinking of you~

Rick, thank you so much for your prayers.  So far so good.  The worst of it is yet to come, but I trust we are going to be okay. It's supposed to hit land in the next hour.   ....jo

Hey, jo! I am so pleased to hear that so far so good for you! I've been watching CNN and noting Rita's path of fury. It does appear that where you live will not be hit as hard as it could have been. Keeping my fingers crossed.  Hang in there! ~ Literally! Hurricane

btw, my email is up and working again.

I'm with you there in spirit!

Love you!

Jo, I do hope you came through unscathed...our friends lost a few limbs in their yard, but didn't mention any flooding in their area...

Great imagery indeed in the shoes and tires washing ashore.  Your last line is forever telling:
"We always get what we beget."

I have family in the Bay St Louis area east of NO.  They are still away from home, but safe.  I pray the same for you and yours.  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

We faired very well.  Only one tree branch and the plants and shrubs are pretty messed up....but we are fine.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers (and kind comments to this poem).  Love you all.........jo

Missed this first go around, so glad to be able to add my words that I am so glad you are safe and sound.  Close call that was.  Take care and what a nice piece of writing this was.

Can't get Karen yet but I will (phone is ringing at least now.)
