It was a storm of tears
Pouring from all directions
What was once safe is now gone

A line never crossed by the sea
Crushed with a long steady ease
Inundated by each wave

The screams came from more then the wind
People begging to be rescued from the rising depths
The guilt also ascending within us

Fathers, Mothers and their children
Family and friends
Faces I once knew

Yet we stayed where we were told
Knowing there was no hope we felt cold
Numb to the bone and waiting

Just waiting
Hands tied
Our pleas of concern denied

By this Hurricane filled with rage
Gutting across the coast
Tearing us out like a books paper page

Dispatch called for 0fficers caught in the flood
No replies in return
An unknown for our own being covered in the bays mud

However even worse was those we are meant to protect
Left feeling abandoned in a deadly unknown
Some cursing and others praying our names we felt the affect

Some of us tried
Then we became trapped
Filled with a broken pride

Guilt drowning us quicker then the storm surging at our doors
How long can this bitch last
A freight train sound passes in the rain

The snapping of trees soon follows
Crashing down into somebody’s home
We hide deeper in our hollow

Eventually an eerie calm comes about
Half day and half night almost a gray glowing light
We try then to rescue those we can soon we are filled with doubt

Debris and bodies scattered over the land
This we find is truly
The day of the damned

This is written not as art
But a release of emotion
That was breaking my heart

My soul will never be the same
I know we will build again
In the end no one is to blame

Tom, I doubt that anyone could read these impassioned cries from your tortured soul without shedding tears of their own. I literally am crying as I write my reply to one of the most emotional poems that I have ever read. I am saving this as a piece of history that was written by someone who lived it ~ and survived.

~ Raw emotions running as wild as a river and carrying the reader along with the rushing flow. I pray for your soul to be healed. You did all that was humanly possible for you to do. God bless you, Tom.

Healing hugs with love,
Linda

Yes, agreeing with Linda here.
A strong, emotional piece of history Tom.

I am certainly glad that you have found the words for this, because I haven't. I am still drawing from everything around me...learning...watching...and hoping for some way to properly express everything.  The stories are amazing where I work. People are still spending money to eat while their homes are just....gone...and it makes me smile every time someone walks through those restaurant doors.

This is a heartwrenching poem. Mostly I just keep my grief for this to myself because there are people far less lucky than me right now.

Glad to see you safe and writing!

Thomas...The frustration you must have felt, wanting so bad too help and not being able too must have been overwellming, and your will too survive keeping you focused on the task at hand so that when the time did come you could help those in need.

So glad you were able too make it thru this terrible ordeal and yes you have too let your heart bleed so that it might heal...Paul

Thomas....know that my family's thoughts and prayers are with you, yours and the entire Gulf Coast.  I have a very, very dear friend in Biloxi.  It took a week before I could find whether she was dead or alive.  Her account of the devastation is heartwrenching and I know that we are really lucky to still have here on this earth.  Your emotions were deeply felt.   ....jo

Dear ((((Thomas)))), your words are a proof of the overwhelming impact this event had on you. Yes I agree no one who goes through such a terrible experience will ever be the same, our material fragility is made clear in such harsh tones!

But your soul is of another substance, it is stronger than we might know. You will recover and you will operate, in order to find solutions which will avoid in the future such devastating effects.

Thank you for expressing your innermost emotions in this impressive work, born in your tormented heart.

Reaching out with a big hug.
Love,
Margherita

In the end, I believe somehow, someway, good things will evolve...and in this emotional write are words of tears, impacted by life and the losses others so tragically experienced.  Yet, somehow I know, some of them, are receiving a new start, in a better place, in a better home, with opportunites at hand...let us hope this advantage comes to each and everyone there.
Hugs

In rebuilding, the healing process begins....and the soul will take new flight....so touching a write, of raw emotion....

Thomas, you have been through an horrible experience, more than most of us can even imagine in our worst nightmares.
Please remember, we are here for you, if there is something we can do for you and your family, friends, neighbors.
I hope you don't mind me printing this out, to share with others who have family and friends devastated by this nightmare.
Heartfelt hugs to all, Kacy.
