As per usual we were late,
Just one time it would be great,
If we could get to church on time,
Promptness kids, is not a crime,
Sneaking in the sanctuary,
Mom & Dad, Todd, Sue and Mary,
Heading to the last row pew,
Someone’s there, oh, what to do?
Don’t they know that’s where we sit,
I didn’t like it, not one bit,
I looked left and I looked right,
All pews were full, folks scrunched in tight,
Then the voice, down from the pulpit,
“The front pew’s open, come up and sit,”
The pastor motioning with his hand,
To come on up to no man’s land,
So up the aisle the family slunk,
It was worse than I could have thunk,
Children pointing, old biddies staring,
And of course, the Deacons glaring,
But at last we made the pew,
All sat down, the side show through,
The preacher said, all bow in prayer,
How I wished I was not there,
But I complied and bowed my head,
And these simple words I said,
If you don’t mind, Lord, just one time,
Next week could you get us, to church on time.

lol. Makes me chuckle Tim as it brings back a memory for me. My two girlfriends and I were late for church one Sunday (we were just 13 years of age), and after finding an empty pew in the silence, we all knelt in prayer on the fold out kneeling bench. BANG! The hinges broke and we three fell to our knees...literally!! Ha ha haaa. My one friends Sunday hat fell down over her face and she just left it there to laugh into. Everyone including Canon Farr glared. We were never late again. Thanks for the smiles. Chris

I've heard tales, recently,
about the habits of the old church...

and times when, during the depression,
in some areas,

how people would have to "pay"
for pews for their family...
and how there were doors hinged
on the seats from the aisle...

how one man and his family couldn't pay
that Sunday's 'rent' for the service...
and he kicked it down and sat, anyway...

and how one woman was only giving a nickel,
and the minister chided her, saying,
"surely, Sister, you can give a little more?"

The woman, of course, responded,
"I could give less, and stay home, too."

"Keep giving the nickle, sister..."

Thanks, Tim!

same here this poem brings back a memory for me..  One day Mom and I was caught in total flood..  and we had had to call one of my mom's friends to take us to church. so she came...  When my mom came into church, she was all drip and wet.. She was on for to cantor.meaning to sing in front of the church..  Which she did well at ..  But the thought of having moments, just happens..  Thanks for sharing this..I did chuckle a smile myself..

Poetry can get you very far

Me too except when it was full I went back home and told them there was not even one seat available.

Cute enough story, and one a lot of us remember I bet?
