Terminal

Strawberry lip gloss
hair tangled in knots
like a cork upon the sea
she's tumbled and tossed
always she's reaching out for me
always I'm retreating into the night
black and silver in the moon's light
white planes gliding through the clouds
what a beautiful sight

Elizabeth in blue
airport angel, you know it's true
she walks the terminal like rain dog
where the scents of familiar love fade away after the rain
leaving you only lonely and a little bit insane

Newark to Miami
she feeds the payphone all day
just to get in touch with me
Seattle to London
she pouts when all her dreams
have come undone
these days an ice cream headeache
would feel better than a quiet heartbreak
I don't know how much more she can take

Elizabeth in red
airport angel hovering over my bed
she walks the terminal in my mind
to remind me of familiar love's sweet taste
leaving my only lonely blues erased

St. Elizabeth, don't cry
see the glow of the world as it rushes by
so come on, curious kitten
come out of your shell
no one ever said it was forever written
your slow decent into hell

Take this love, it's duty-free
on a midnight flight via Calexico
open your arms for me
open up for me

Elizabeth in love
airport angel gliding down from above
I'll make a place for you to land
we'll walk the terminal hand in hand
we'll walk the terminal till you understand
I'm only wanting to be here with you, now
no matter what you say...

So Elizabeth, don't cry
see the glow of the world as it rushes by
come on, out of your shell
and into the night,
tracing down where the moon fell
to be cleansed in that white light

Strawberry lip gloss
heart tangled in knots
on a flight from midnight to Miami
the turbulance has got us tossed
on the wind, tasting of frost
but the palms may welcome us
in the glittering sand we'll put our trust
white plane gliding through the world
a halo for this beautiful girl

Elizabeth in a rainbow of colors
airport angel, you're a wonder
she walks the terminal
and like the scent of love rediscovered after the rain
she leaves me full tonight, watching the planes
as they glide...
and they glide with me
