Burns Bog is the largest undeveloped urban landmass in North America, and is thus constantly threatened by human development. It is located in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. The ecologically sensitive bog is home to more than 200 species of migratory birds.

Some parts of Burns Bog is privately owned and it continues to be threatened by unwanted development. Since inception in 1988, the Burns Bog Conservation Society has been focused on protecting it for future generations.

The smoke can be seen as far as Bellingham in Washington, it's really a sad situation.

My family lives in Richmond so I am wondering if they are getting any of that smoke.

Fire is unbelievably destructive. I can imagine the screams of the poor creatures that are dying in it. The loss of flora and fauna and how the delicate eco systems of the bog are being affected, bog-gles one's mind!

I checked out the two links you gave, and that bog is, or rather, was, beautiful.

I pray that the fires will soon be snuffed out!

When I was a kid, I loved swamps (sophisticated people called them bogs..lol)

I still do, even as I teeter on the brink of geezerhood, I find them enchanting, from their mucky bottoms to the top of the highest flying dragonflies wings....They are simply beautiful...This one sounds like no exception...

Thank you for writing about it, Sharon...

How tragic. I suppose there is no way to stop it.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Hi!

That bog is protected but prime real estate, so I sure have my own idea how this fire started but what a sad thing.  You have to see all the different animals and birds there to believe it.  I contribute every year to the Burns Bog Conservation Society, because of their great work and great family events. http://www.burnsbog.org/

I live miles away from this fire and the smell is horrible!  Downtown Vancouver looked like Los Angeles on a bad day     for two days and the soot it sends in the air is bothering people's breathing.

Earth Angel - Richmond businesses had to close because the quality of breathing was compromised, so yes, they got it!

Here is a link to further tell you about the Bog fire.  It is very sad to those of us that want so hard to preserve some natural surroundings for the future.

Ice ~ You mean I have a real swamp up here?  Awesome!  Wait until I tell Serenity!

Larry, these fires can get underground in the root system, and although they have fought this for days, they only do it during they day, so it could still be days until they get this under control.  Dang shame.

Thanks for the link. After reading it I phoned my parents and fortunately, they are not being affected by the smoke. I hope it stays that way! Fingers Crossed

Sharon, the Bog is another terrible example of just how far out of balance things are.  I hope it is not too late for Mother Earth to prove her point.  Thanks for the caring and sensitively written piece.   ....jo

Sharon, I'm so sad to hear of this fire. It breaks my heart that so much of our natural land and resources are being either developed or destroyed. The poor little animals, what a crying shame.

Please keep us informed. I'm sure there's a story behind this fire.

Hugs and try to stay indoors.  Marti

The 200-hectare fire is being battled by Delta firefighters and water-bombed from above by the B.C. Forest Service. The cause is still under investigation.

It's trying to rain today so I hope that helps a bit.  What a darn shame, some of those animals and birds are no where to be found here but in that sanctuary.
