The massage humbly stated
Was so powerful and true
"Do unto others as you would
Have them do unto you"
And yet so many times I’ve let
The chances pass on by
Somehow it took a hurricane
To wake a sleeping eye

In black and white the words are there
Precise and plain and clear
“Love one another“, long ago
Had settled in my ear
So many times I’ve said these words
And kept them in my mind
Somehow it took a hurricane
To cruelly heal the blind

And so I offer all I can
To those souls in distress
As though I am fulfilling
All the love that I profess
To share my time and wealth is
Not so honorable a deed
When I so often overlooked
The ones who were in need

Does God allow the ravages
Of storm and wind and quake
To punish us or to restore
Our souls for our own sake?
The words “Do unto others”
I held sweetly in my keep
But somehow it took a hurricane
To make my spirit weep

Compassion is a hallmark
That I liked to claim as mine
But giving love unnoticed
Without pondering is divine
For every day is worthy of
Whatever I can give
And loving all in serving Christ
Is how He’d have me live

As you would have men do for you
Do for your fellow man
Somehow it took a hurricane
To make me understand
Beyond destruction and despair
I see a wondrous goal
Despite my weeping heart
There is renewal of the soul

Far, far beyond the scope of man
Embedded in obscurity
There is inherent clarity
In all that God allows to be

Liz, dear friend.  Your words are so true, and so wise and need to be published somewhere where more can see more clearly, what being a good person is all about.

That is the same question I have been asking myself for over a week now.

It took a hurricane to awaken a giving spirit in us all I think Liz.  Nicely done!

I know this is something I need to remember...it's easy to think we are doing all the right things, but sometimes we get a wake up call! And it's not always pleasant. Well done, Elizabeth!
