In New Zealand Amongst the Ancient Trees

on winged flight
I rise from the dead
water trails
above cumulus
vaporizing in sunlight

away

from the oppressive heat
of the past few weeks

weeks..? not hard to lose that sort of time there.

it’s the sort of place where
you pray for a breeze
but when it comes
you wish there was none
for it raises the dust
which clings to everything
and everyone
no ethnicity here
just one color

and the dead, could have been a scene painted by Dante

days

with a cat thundering beneath
it’s lost it’s exhaust
a blessing in disguise
for it helps to nullify
the mourning cry

the blade gouges the earth
laying out the trench
and clouds of dust and flies rise
swirling in the air
above the engines heat

in between you seek what little shade there is

watching

the others walking the lines
of massed humanity
extracting the dead and dying
which gave rise to thoughts
of the great medieval plague
and the cart riders on the streets
calling “bring out your dead”

you can tell newbies here
they carry each with care
down into the trench
the older hands less ceremonious
simply roll them in
leaving them to those at the bottom
to lay them out
like bricks for a kiln

then it’s time to stride the cat again, and with little conscious thought put the earth back in

from dawn till dusk
it’s a repetitive task

evening

and all you want
is a long hot shower
but water like the facilities
is scarce and unless
you want to join
the carnivore hour
beneath the bower
at the rivers edge
you forego the pleasure
and seek solace in the sack
with dust jacket intact

now

at 35k in pressurised
metal jacket air con comfort
I have risen from the dead
and the too rich food
I have been fed
sits in my stomach like lead

home

for now
sleep

Life is a dream or nightmare but from either or both we will eventually wake up and then I wonder - will we smell the roses or prick ourselves on the thorns?  If I choose a dream and you a nightmare who can say which is better or worse in the grand scheme of things which we never will know whether asleep or awake?

A nightmare rendered with impressive skill!
