A lifelong love kept in his heart
And she knew she was always part
Of something special but forbidden
Love for him, always hidden

For she had made another life
Became a mother and a wife
And he, too, took himself a mate
To pass the years of the wait

And in those years of misery
He lived his life so carelessly
Smoking, drugs and alcohol
Finally took a heavy toll

Now he lies, for death, awaiting
Life, no longer captivating
His body’s tired and broken down
No need for him to stay around

In she slips on quiet feet
Watching him in restless sleep
A gentle kiss upon his cheek
With labored breath he tries to speak

“Tell me what you never would
That in your heart I always stood
And that you love me to this day
So I can finally go my way”

A gentle whisper in his ear
“I do love you and hold you dear
For you were always in my heart
Never were we far apart”

He smiled that smile she’s always known
And started on his journey home
She stayed there watching every breath
Till there was none – only death.

talk about choices huh, but in the same, you gotta admire them both, for staying true to their choices...and not moving on impulse.  Great story, I liked!

This is a beautiful piece, in both sentiment and in the way you sculpt the words. I much appreciate the read.

Perhaps a true reflection of life that leads into and leaves the reader somewhat emotional.  Good write!
