Echoes

Who dares to dance the shadows where
Echoes solemnly stir?
Is not the past a penance, fair,
For memories to blur?

The relics of ambition,
But a forgone afterthought,
Coming to their fruition
Prove some things are best forgot.

Thus imbued, duly renewed,
Why shake your fist at time?
The demon seed, history’s deed,
Forever-trapped in rhyme.

Where yet the scavengers of hope
Drink from the well of sorrow,
Never coming to see today
As yesterday’s tomorrow…

Or wake to wander in a dream
That outlives such misgiving;
Cries from unburied dead that seem
Yet haunted by the living.

An empty face, an empty space,
It’s really no surprise.
Some move to a far better place
But weighted souls won’t rise.

Instead we writhe and pay our tithe
To some forgotten trust,
As even Death passes us by
On wings as dry as dust…

To share, at most, the blood of ghost
In promises unbroken.
Listen to the silence, my friend,
Indeed, the dead have spoken.

Michael

And to think I was about to have a seance in your honor, too.

But yes, this is exactly the stuff I'm talking about.

"I was talking to a moth the other evening..."

OH. Wait. That's Don Marquis.

But I really was talking to a moth the other evening, and I told her that you were the first poet I read at Pip that inspired me to hug my monitor!

And then? I studied you so closely, m'friend, because of this--the delicious melancholy, the flow, and the wisdom.

In retrospect, I blatantly copied your style, too, Mike. (I shoulda been embarrassed for myself for I was as bad as Oprah wearing that Tina Turner wig for six months.)

"Who dares to dance the shadows where
Echoes solemnly stir?"

I do! I dance where I yam. And you have made me very happy this evening.

thank you

mind if I fly in your flame?

Oh how I love when you haunt us. *S*

Yep... this is classic M POE-try ...so few
can write the melancholy with such mastery that the reader wants to celebrate the chill running down their spine...
so many impressive lines in this...
so many clever phrases and word play..

Never coming to see today
As yesterday’s tomorrow…

~~
Some move to a far better place
But weighted souls won’t rise.

Instead we writhe and pay our tithe
To some forgotten trust,
As even Death passes us by
On wings as dry as dust…

and then there is the cadence..this rocks read aloud...it must be read aloud to do it justice!!

Who dares to dance the shadows where
Echoes solemnly stir?

Who dares?
YOU DO...and Im so glad you do what you do.

yes..I have to ditto Sen's gleeeeee
its so good to read you again Michael..
theres so much to be learned from your gifts of expression and meter...
you've inspired many of us old ghosts here

I'll bare the brunt of your long buried pain
I don't mind helping you out ...
But I want you to remember my name

Oh wishes really do come true!  I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and it was sure worth it.  Actually you Michael, are a recommendation to poets in the Workshop, and you should be in the Passions Hall of Fame.  Can you tell you have a loyal fan in me?

Oh this...my, my

And this, mercy me!

It's the rhyme, the reason, and the rhythm that gets me, yes it does!

You are indeed my all-time favorite! Thank you for a new piece to read and re-read.

Talk about co-inky-dinks - look at this Michael LOL.  I was talking with Nan earlier, posting this in her workshop, and said, "Nan!  He posted a new one!"  We both ran.

*shaking head* powerful. "scavengers of hope" there is no better way to say it.

Oh I wanted to quote it all.  Every last delicious word...

Hey all,

Thank you for the warm welcome back.

Good to see so many friendly faces still here.

Can't promise I will be posting too much with my work related time constraints -- this was just something I wrote a couple months back while flying back to North Carolina and happened to run across recently.  Seeing as it was actually inspired by something on these boards I figured I'd share it with you all   I'm glad you found it enjoyable.

I do have some ideas I have been trying to work into poetry but somehow most of what I want to write these days is of epic proportion and I can never seem to find the time to make it happen.  Writing doesn’t seem to come to me as easily as it once did, or at least my muses don’t seem to show up as often as they used to.  When I do get something done, however, I promise you will be the first to see it.

love ya all

Haha Christopher, you mean everyday isn't a holiday?  Good to see you too, my fellow ghost.

Dixie, it wasn't N.C. that was the inspiration for this poem, that was just the destination of my plane trip when I actually found the time to write it.  Ironically, it was your "Bury the Dead" /pip/Forum3/HTML/003618.html post that brought about this poem, I just never had the chance to post this when that thread was still active.
