It was a time
When US Marines
Were a dime a dozen

As I recall
They fought Germans
Cowboys
Indians
Johnny Reb and strangely
Never any Japanese

How they battled among the shoes

Shot down by marbles
Rubber bands
BB guns and anything a boy could throw

I’ve lost the way
That took it seriously

So there they are on the closet shelf
Waiting for their commander to reappear

Above the clothes
I’ll never wear again

The box of pictures
Faded letters
From someone I used to know

That was touching...deeply personal.  I was more than touched by this poem...but I'm at a loss for the right word to explain what I feel.
