Flick the switch
in your head,
turn off the
colour, grey shades
coming sharply into
focus, welcome to
my world of
immaculate plainess, can
you assilimilate images?
Be careful as
you walk down
slimy, miasmic streets,
alleyways, dark gloom,
hiding ambushing, angry,
rabid dogs, gnashing.
Slide into the
cold comforting water,
black film rippling
across the canal,
clouds blocking sunlight.
Dip beneath the
surface, decaying dogs
attached to chains,
dark staring eyes
of newborn babies,
gently bobbing on
the bottom, syringes,
beer cans, fridges.
Step up through
manholes, people go
about their life,
sickness within them,
passed on by
the acceptible media.
Image, image, image,
so what if
children are dying
of starvation? Am
i wearing correct
clothing? Is it
good enough? Do
i look right?
Let me escape,
to the meeting
houses, blur out
this world, with
booze, drugs, both.
Out of my
head, i can
fall into dreams,
about being good,
respecting people, showing
compassion, wearing sensible
clothing, raising children
healthily, laughing, playing
ball games on
blue sky beaches,
life lived free
from controlling substances.
Abruptly, sitting up,
breathing hard, the
grey world falls
back down upon
me, i'm back,
what a nightmare!

Not exactly one of your feel-good pieces of poetry! ~ but man alive, does it pack a punch to the solar plexus.

Thankfully for you, 'twas just a nightmare but unfortunately, as you so eloquently expressed, it is a living nightmare for so many...

A very good write!

reality we were not informed about until we met these images you so perfectly describe...I'd like to continue to pretend, they don't exist in my world

Chilling write...very well done!

Thank you to all who replied...a darker subject than usual...but i live in a light and dark world...darkness sometimes more than light...

some of those images are downright bothersome
but then nightmares are usually vividly painted exaggerations of the contrasts of life's dark and light sides
