The Flower

On a crisp cloudless spring morning,
I take a stroll through an empty field,
Where my only company is the pirouetting skylark
That’s dancing its mid mornings ballet.

A picturesque scene surrounds me,
Hills gleaming like emeralds carved from the turquoise
River that meanders through the landscape so eloquently.
The larger mountains capped with snow on their peaks, mysterious
Yet inviting.
And down below, the valley walls greet the flowing river, meeting like lovers,
Spawning offspring that transcends the valley floor into a mosaic of colours, as the rich radiance of the flowers gleam in the low spring sun.

But this is as far as I go, for at the edge of the field I stand upon lays a crest, over which I cannot see.
Something could be lurking over the brow, waiting for me, using the beauty in the distance to lure me into some trap.
I dare not take the risk, so every morning I stand here, bask in the vista before me that fills my heart with hope, but then I turn my back, and the hope is replaced by feelings of shame, shame that I do not have the courage to meet my fear and to find new happiness in the place I seek.

The days roll by and the same monotonous routine continues, each day I visit the same field where my perpetual walking has left nothing but bare earth beneath my feet.
And the clouds are starting to descend, like a slow moving avalanche, they smoother the mountain peaks, eating away at what crave.

As my hope is fading as quickly as the vista before me, something catches my eye.
On the opposite bank of the river, a flower sways, gracefully dancing in the wind, and as I stare down upon this flower all else around me disappears.
Captured by the beauty I take a few steps forward.
From the corner of my eye I see the crest approaching, but where the fear once lived now lives intrigue and wonder for the small but beautiful flower that has caught my eye.

Now, I’m stood upon the crest,
Anticipation grows, dare I jump and risk the pain of the landing or do I turn my back and watch the clouds descend.
I look up one more time, and before my head can decide my heart has jumped and I land so gently, as if the butterflies in my stomach have guided me down.
Before me lays an open path, which as I walk upon, leads me closer to the river, and the flower which calls from the opposite shore.

The journey is short, but as I reach my destination I notice the river is raging, the flower I ache for is just out of reach, the water to deep to pass.
So close to something I yearn to touch, to hold to love.
With heavy heart I fall to the floor, thinking of ways to get the opposite shore, then I see the flower again, its head shaking in the wind, we can not be together, what was I thinking, I was too blind to realise.
But the flower has opened my heart, led me back into a world where it had feared to go.

Now I’m in a field of flowers, my destiny surrounds me, I’m now back in a place where my heart had lost, and there’s always a chance that as time goes by, the flower that guided me back will cross the river and bring the dreams I dream.

"and before my head can decide my heart has jumped and I land so gently"

happy landing!
This is such a wonderful write.
I enjoyed the scenery, the journey, the hopeful ending. Well done!
