For 20 Ohio Marines
[A Tribute from Butler, Pa.]

Did you feel the wave of sympathy
surging across the Pennsylvania line
and out to you,
the families left behind?

We know.
For we saw your boys
here among ours,
in our streets jogging,
in cars, in shopping malls,
in churches, at picnics,
and High School proms,
and not too long ago
with fathers on the Fourth
watching soldiers
march along Main Street,
and saw them straighten
when the flag unfurled.

We saw them at gates
hugging wives and families,
grandparents
and girls who couldn't let go—
turning then to leave
with head held high,
looking back one last time.

Twenty, they reported,
had fallen, from us now so far.
We weep with you.
For yours are ours.

and now we stand again,
hand on heart,
heads bowed

our prayers with them,
their families,
and grateful
for their service
to one and all.

Charles

I have seen them too....from any city, from too many cities, and I mourn the loss.

Can we stop killing anyone of any country and any nationality

Anyone who volunteers for the armed forces accepts being killed

It is a fundamental part of volunteering

You dont blame someone else

No-one forces you to volunteer

It is not a game

Well done, Charles

The sympathy flows from every direction of the giver, and the space it crosses is bridged by human prayer...

And I see this poem as a prayer, an acknowledgement, a bridge across
life and death, and although I disagree strongly with the cause of these deaths, I have stifled my argument. A poem such as this tells me to put grievance away, and allow myself to grieve.

Thank You

Charles, this was a thoughtful and well-written tribute....evokes much emotion from this ole Buckeye now transplanted elsewhere.  Thank you for penning it.
