I wept at the sky for you
catching catastrohpies,
revelling in celebrations,
wearing the interception
between sun shadow and moondance,
tricking down on grey pavement,
turning stoneface to wonderwhirls,
bearing fruits of the seasons
from blossom to maturity,
standing stoic in potter's field,
decked out in pidgeon droppings,
in the trenches where the forgotten lay,
where barely a robin would sing,
kneeling on battered knees
with prayers cast on hanging arms,

so soften your eyes towards me,
a stump in the ground for now,
on the head of the profiteers
making room for conglomerates,

i've held up the sky for you
facing adversity
looking up to the prophets,
with my roots in eternity.

(aging tree/goddess musings)

Now you've done it!  With this beautiful piece of poetry you have made me miss our Kit and her willow tree.   Now that tree of hers, has done all that you say and more, and its trunk has so many faces from ages past hidden for all to find.

This was just such beautiful work!  Now who could cut something such as this down?  When will they ever learn to build around them?

OH. Just in case you haven't heard of the legendary Julia "Butterfly" Hill, I thought you (and others) might enjoy her story.

There's an excellent documentary that runs occasionally on Sundance too. Catch it if you can.

and a hug for you too, mish.

Good God, you know I read this in many ways but mostly, first I saw it as the Virgin Mary, an old forgotten statue in a park or an old churchyard and of course, then, as your beloved tree, the one in which I do believe you share a soul with.

See?  I never (try not to) look at the title before I read, I just try to read, then look at the title)

Amazing story Karen, thank you for that - as we see Michele on the 11 o'clock news:

"Woman in Jersey refusing to come down from her tree, holding many small kittens in her arms . . ."

Michele, it makes me so sad when a tree dies or is killed.  I think they are wiser than us.  Thanks for sharing your caring soul and well-written verse.   .......jo

Wonderful and insightful Inkedgoddess. You captured the magnitude and the beauty in this. It is such a tragedy when years of growth are cut down in the blink of an eye. I very much enjoyed this piece and it's message.

Best wishes and tree hugs,
/Kit

and when I am hewn down
and my limbs are severed
will you clutch me to your bosom
and hurry me to your room of dreams
and place me there below your mantle
to be the warm with which your woman bathes

enjoyed this miss inky

This is beautiful, Michelle. I hate for
those big beautiful old trees to be cut
down. It was really sad, too, when so many trees
were uprooted around here during the hurricanes
these last couple of years.
Good writing, Lady.
Hugs,
Ethel

Love this poem, Ms.Goddess
Reminds me of a huge, old hickory tree that I passed everyday for years, that grew close to the curb, on the way into town...Demand for wider streets, demanded it gone....:-(

Mans infringement
Makes all things semi permanent.
More tires rolling
The street needed wideness
Which made the Hickory shudder
As workmen approached it,
With gas fumes and helmets
To collect the price of progress;
Even though the tree signed no mortgage,
They came to foreclose, by cutting it down..

You have written a beautiful poem, I can feel  passion in it, I like that feeling..thank you

The older the tree the more stories it can tell...imagine what it has been witness to...a poem that touches the heart....*big hugs*
