Roll Cast

In the heat of August
a flawless blue
bakes into the river
sending trout deep. There,
like secrets kept,
they assume dark shapes.
I watch them,
now and then glancing off
to where a large, black woman,
city bred, though not a tourist,
hangs wash on the front porch of a cabin
she sometimes rents out. We've never met
though once, in the off season,
our hips brushed as they attempted to negotiate
between the shelves of overpriced canned goods.
That said, she knows I catch fish.
Stepping back I feel the bottom
suction like a bad habit
at the rubber soles of my hip boots.
Free at last
I drop into the grass along the bank
and yank repeatedly at the heels
until they yield into the shade
my skinny calves. I hear a laugh
and catch the space between her breasts
following her voice into the laundry basket.
Purple waves in my direction
from the taut clothes line. Again the laugh.
Again the space, followed by an exquisitely tight fit
as she hefts the wicker onto her hip
and, opening the screen door, steps inside.
Late that night, upon a cot within my tent,
I see again that deep, dark space
accompanied by a knowing laugh
that rolls me, finally, onto my stomach.

Hey, Interloper, I noticed the other day that you were back. At least (not having been around much myself) I assumed it was your return. Thank you for the kind response. Bob

You set the scene
set the hook
and snag the reader...

what a fisherman!

Welcome home, Robert.

My love of flyfishing attracted me to this.

I like it!

Quite a lot...enough to send me to the archives, in fact.

Very nicely done, sir
