At A Glance

Sinking in the rainfall
boot heels worn like a Joni Mitchell record
softly I'm playing my bedside psalms
bathing the dreary city in memories of her
memories of her

And it was at a glance
I was pulled into a May romance
so I thought I'd take a chance on...

Ah, sweet Carolina grace
a quzzical look on her face
Scarlett carried herself like a carriage
through the gates of an Irish cemetery
daydreamed about a perfect marriage
she sketched the one she'd marry
she'd be perfectly joined to one
just like the sky to the sun

This whole situation
left me contemplating
tea time summer Sundays with her
trying to change her mind
with W.B. Yeats and rainy jazz records
and I used to dance with her in my Beatle boots
and I used to glance at her with needing looks
needing to needle my way
into her crochet style
wanting to stay
until I decoded the meaning of her smile
she used to feather me with
the weather would plead the fifth
whenever I stared into her eyes
blue-green and amazing me
like poetry
read on stormy weekends
written on clear blue mornings
how my bones would sing
when she would sing to me

And it was at a glance
I was pulled into a May romance
so I thought I'd take a chance on this
blueprint of bliss

No second-hand raincoat
shall give me away
tonight on this riverboat
as I try to glide her way
through these stuffy social circles
for I am a son of steel mill workers
but Pittsburgh is but ash at my heels
or so I'd like to think, or so I'd like to feel
I wear a smile of accomplishment
to fool her family with rich endowment
just to get to her
blue teddy bears matching her dress
just to get through to her
bird on the wire punctuating my distress

Sweet fragrant Scarlett
let me in your window
I'm soaking wet
let me brush your cheek and know
just why I'm bound to you
like a captain to a skeleton crew
as I'm sinking down, now
as I'm thinking I'm in deep and how

And now
come away with me
into the blackberry painted night
come away and see
how you bring my eyes into the light
and maybe deep inside
you'll see the coaly world I try to hide
from you
black Pennsylvania coal
contrast with Carolina blue
but through whatever push and pull
we can make it somehow
say we can, please
ah, poor boy, don't look now
as she slinks with ease
back to her beautiful world
back, never to stay my girl
the factory shrills in my ear
but I can't run back there
think I'll take a year
and feel the California sun on my hair

But now I'm
sinking in the Frisco rainfall
boot heels worn like my shredded heart
softly I'm playing and replaying my foolish fall
on a borrowed twelve-string guitar
every melody still adoring her from afar
oh so far away
what can I say
I thought I found myself in a May romance
but it seems I lost myself at a glance
at a glance of a Scarlett blur
a glimmer of a chance with her

a blackberry painted sky....sigh
you bring your words to life...

In your light I learn how to love
In your beauty how to make poems
You dance inside my chest where
no one sees you and that sight becomes this art

Zach:
this is amazing writing.

You stirred in me so much music - times - that are precious to me . . . and made me think Of James Taylor, "Carolina on my Mind"  (God, used to sing that as a lullaby to my son) and "River" sheesh - I cant get through that tune without crying and then I just flip on "Chelsea Morning"  and also, Carole King . . .  you should read this book "Hippie"  by Barry Miles - you would love it, I suggested it to Kacy.

Whoa, this was a certain ballad, that I would love to hear put to music...
it surely made me remember a time, a time, and took me right into the core of that moment, again

wonderfully written...
