On This Island Paradise

I found it quite by accident.
I was walking the rim of Diamond Head,
in the moonlight, right at midnight,
when a menehune popped his head
from a volcanic hole, just
below the lower trail.
He thought he was being slick,
ducking back down real quick, but
his location and disposition were
already identified by my eagle eye.
The moon went behind the clouds
and for that moment disappeared,
so I strapped on my night vision goggles,
and everything became crystal clear.
Just below the outcrop of rocks,
and below a stately banyan tree,
the entrance to a cave was beckoning me.
I wondered how the cave appeared,
I had walked these trails many times
and that entrance was never here.
Still there was no way I could resist,
I am curious by nature, a rogue adventurest.
I slid into the cave, quite narrow
when you first enter in, but following
a short descent it opened into a
passageway that started to descend.
The walls emited a yellow glow,
the source of the light,
I don't presume to know.
The trail gently descended nice
and slow, but every now and then
a stairway descended to a level below.
After what seemed like a long walk,
but probably only a mile, a
heavenly hula girl approached me,
wearing only a lei and a smile.
A closer look revealed she was
wearing coconut shells on top,
and a hula skirt and slippers below.
She said, Come this way, you're
just in time for the evening show.
Just then I heard the music,
the beating of the drums,
guitars and ukulele's,
and beautiful Hawaiian songs.
Before me was a cavern,
as wide as Haunama Bay,
and a hundred hula girls dancing
as the polynesian music played.
I sat in the audience, many
others sat with me; including
King Kamehameha, Kalakaua,
and Queen Lili'uokalani.
That night was special,
it brought joy to my heart,
and tears to my eyes, to
share an enchanting evening
with Royalty, on this
island paradise.

Although I clearly prefer the first half of this poem, I must say anyway, that it flows in a way that I very much enjoy.
Reading long poems is usually not an easy thing for me, but I enjoyed reading this one. Well written

Those menehune never were the brightest bulbs, were they -- didn't size up the Tahetians for what they really were and stop them at the breakers, so in the end they paid the price: not just extinction, but extinction and the laughter of those who dealt it to them.

I've always thought it a shame that they didn't hold on, or find their way to a place beyond war....but I digress, when I set out just to say I like this story-poem, and there aren't many of those that I do like.
