Night Knowledge
By Larry Chadwick

I had no idea
that I slept in the comfort
of knowing you were there.

And then you were…
gone.
I attempted to sleep
as I always had.
Instead I laid awake
for fear that in sleeping
I would lose you.

Eventually, I came to understand
that no one can take
what we already had shared.
A weak compensation
for losing you.

So now I can sleep
though occasionally I awake…
too soon.
Last night it was to hear
the song from your funeral.

I slept again because…
now I have confidence
in the memory of you.
Compensation enough…
I am sure it would be okay with you.
July 30, 2005

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

It's a hard thing to learn how to do. And one that, for me at least, has to be learned and relearned over and over again. It's always so awesome to see how your love for her seeps through every word you write. Love ya, sir.

Take care.
Always, Alyssa

this seemed like a very long movie, to which the ending was left of in the air for awhile, but finally came to terms as one of happiness and peace...putting the title to rest

Enjoyed this

Susan,
I'm not sure how that happens but please don't be offended if I take satisfaction in that.

Dearest Alyssa,
Not sure how you always do that. But you sure make me feel good.

Ethel,
Well now, I like that. And thanks for the compliment.

LeeJ,
Hmmm, I have to think about that one. Thank you for challenging my mind.

Our most gutwrenching pain ends up being some of our greatest teachers...
although I wish it didnt have to be at such great cost...you have come to possess many a wisdom ... there is a gentle peace found in these moments of discovery and it brings a smile to my heart to read the understanding and acceptance youve found in this. The healing comes in the gifts given from "love's lingerings" and the "traces left behind" ..
but then you already know that.

one drop, an ocean ... one seed, the forest ... one leaf, the wind ...
~ take only memories ... leave only footprints ~

this is how love and hope help in healing...
I am sure your memories are big and full....heart hugs....luv you

In your light I learn how to love
In your beauty how to make poems
You dance inside my chest where
no one sees you and that sight becomes this art

Larry,
that is exactly how it works...having lost my Dad and my sister in so few years...the first devastated me, the second allowed me to be freer to remember the good though still missing the reality of touch...

Always enjoy the growth in your words~~

Indeed, it would be... she'd want you to sleep peacefully and be comforted by memories... not agonized...

What a beautiful tribute to love everlasting.

Larry...So very touching.
No one really knows the true feeling of losing someone until it's too late, then they realize they haven't really lost them at all, they are just apart for a little while. Take care dear friend and know that forever she is in your heart...Paul

It's a given, need you either ask or question!

Thank you for sharing your heart and her memory, Larry~
