Scraped Elbows

Scraped my elbow yesterday.
Haven't had a brush-burn like that in a long time.
Baseball, football, riding my bicycle, skating -
as a kid I had my share of tender elbows,
every one a badge of sorts,
a testimony to my prowess,
my virility;  a manly wound.

But none of them ever compared
to the badges I was given
by the living room carpet, the couch,
that big old easy chair in front of the TV.
Those never hurt until later,
were worn with tremendous pride,
were laughingly shown to all my friends.

But the kids are grown now.

Rough-housing with them on the floor,
the chair, or wherever they decided to jump me,
is now just a memory we share,
something I think about when I scrape my elbow.

Like yesterday -
a manly wound from the living room carpet,
worn with pride even today,
shared only with you,
yesterday evening,
youth we'd forgotten we had.

Scraped elbows
memories of other days.

This left me with a wicked grin...
and a warm feeling inside.
I'm so pleased I didn't miss this one..fantastic.

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back
