Moved from a shack to a barn

I think it may have been butter that started all this

Or rather, the portrait of a young woman
Dressed as a Native American
Kneeling on the front of a Land O’ Lakes box

I think it was she, who first sparked in me
Contemplation on the way of things

Not her knees, visible and bare below her buckskin
Nor any thought of what might be hiding above them

It was many years ago, you see

And I, still fine and pink
Like to believe I was too young for such queries

But I did notice the box she was holding
And that it was exactly like the one she was on

Complete with a picture, exactly her likeness
Buckskin, braids, bare knees and all
And she too, of course, was holding a box

Giving my second grade brain its first glimpse of infinite

It was only later I realized a maid, Indian or otherwise
Once diminished by distance or time
Might steal quietly away from where you last saw her

To follow a great herd of clouds, humpbacked and gray
Thundering in their hurry, their hooves sparking the sky
Threatening to set the blue plain afire

Only to leave them for a stretch of green abandon
Slipping her suede from between her and the dew
The prairie grasses bend and lie trembling beneath her

Her knees, now framing the Sun

and only you would see that . . .

and I sit here and smile - shaking my head pondering now, what was to each side of her?

See what you done?

is not!
is too, infinity!

remember that?

Everything seems infinite to this adult mind. Sometimes it just seems like even that which ends goes on forever.

Remarkable talent you have Sir.
I applaud you being able to take
the pic on the Land o' Lakes butter box
and turn it into this beautiful piece.
I am going to library this
even though it will stay etched in my mind
for a very very long time.

Thank you for this keeper!

And I remember the Marboro man
With his pecks all buff and hard
His face with a deep dark tan
Always holding the winning card
Riding his horse into the sunset
He probably hooked up with the girl in the
blue bonnet.
