Dearest Mum,

I want to
write you
a tribute
about how I am a leaf
on your giant tree
How you anchor me
strongly to the ground
with your firm presence,
yet are gentle enough
to let me be free
to strive for the sunlight

I won't do that
Not that I mind cliches;
in fact, I think
people don't give
them enough respect
But mum,
you write poetry yourself
And your birthday
is too special
for me to fathom
writing something about
the tried-and-tested

Mum,
I want to
write you a sonnet
about how I am a rose
The sharp thorns
represent my darker side,
all the bad things that
have happened to me
The flower suggests
how radiant and beautiful and strong
I have come to be--
I won't have prevailed without you

But mum,
your birthday is
too special for me
to dwell on unhappy things

Mum,
I want to
write you an ode
about how I am
the errant one
among a pack of puppies
Sometimes, I
wag my tail mournfully
for all the trouble
I have given you

But mum,
I know you
would chide me instead
And your birthday is
too special for me
to take things to heart

Mum,
I want to
write you a poem
But your birthday is too special
and my words are too humble

So I'll just say
from the bottom of my heart:

Happy birthday, Mum
Thanks for your unconditional love
It nurtures me; it sustains me
I love you too

written for a friend whose mum's birthday is approaching

Kaile,
And I just want to say what a wonderful son you are. You have such a kind, generous heart. It makes me proud to call you friend. Peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

What a beautiful poem and such an honour for your mother!!!  I bet she cried buckets of tears when she saw this.  You have a heart of gold my young friend and you have a talent for touching others through your poems.  I pray you continue to write both for your mom and just for you to express yourself.  I hope to see more of you here.
