As he lay in his bed,
the young man thought
about his life, so far…

It was a short time ago
When I was just a young child
I was running and playing
Most rambunctious and wild

Stepping out through life’s gate
There was no one behind me
The days were forever
At night I slept, soundly

Along came my teen years
Was I a child or a man?
Confused and bewildered
No thought of a plan

The nights were forever
At times, I thought soundly
In front was my future
the past, close behind me

As he lay in his bed,
the old man thought
about his life, so far…

When I was a young man,
I constructed a wall
With the key to life’s answers
Thinking, it could never fall

Nobody could tell me
I did not want to hear
I am my own man now
I have nothing to fear

Then along came my wife
And she broke through that wall
We started our family
And my youth would soon fall

I remember it quite well
The celebration and cheer
I was still in my prime
But the forties were near

As he lay in his bed,
the dying man thought
about his wife, so near…

It never did matter
When my youth slipped away
I had her to grow old with
My soulmate 'til this day

And he spoke to her…

"We’d been together always
Or so it seemed that way
I love you more than ever
And so this I now must say...

You were always caring
For me, you were always there
So, hold me for the last time...

He takes a deep breath, sighs, and whispers...

With you... I have no fear."

As he lay in his bed
The dead man was smiling

I am most touched by this write~

And this -

'The nights were forever
At times, I thought soundly
In front was my future
the past, close behind me'

... such a lovely thought~

I am hoping that you will read this one -

I also loved that verse, Mike.
And there was a time I would have liked to think that when my life was over that
I would feel as the person in your poem.

he was smiling b/c the only thing we have to come in and go out with is love...and he knew he was loved...more so, appreciated it above all else.
