Listen to the rain she said, pouring down out back
I looked out the window, the sky was black
I sat at the table while she made me some tea
Her dog came in and started licking me

It was our first date though I’d known her some time
We met when I started the job at the mine
With the bad weather out we decided to stay in
We sat on the couch talking and then

A knock on the door, she said "Who could that be?"
Her old boyfriend and he was looking for me
He pushed right past her and headed my way
With a look in his eyes that left nothing to say

I jumped up and took on a fighting stance
Ready to swing when given the chance
Then he stopped in his tracks and started to cry
And he told me he loved her and asked me if I

Would let him talk to her for a minute or two
I looked at her face and right then I knew
That she still loved him regardless of me
A hard truth to swallow, a hard truth to see

So I stepped aside and let them go
Into the kitchen where they talked kinda’ low
I slipped out the front door and got in my car
Started driving away and hadn’t gone far

When my phone started ringing, I could see it was her
She was calling to thank me and I knew for sure
That I’d done the right thing by walking away
I’d be going to their wedding one of these days

I could’ve stayed and made trouble for him
But I knew what I did was better for them
I’d been in that spot and felt so down
It’s the reason I had moved into that town.
