When the chasm is too wide between the heart and mind
a soul in the wilderness picks berries to survive
but this bounty past the season too meager in its offerings
to one schooled and tutored in the finer things.

And the mountain of the mind stands like a wrathful God
in chastisement of the soul for not following directions
to the table of heart prepared and pre-ordained.

The soul dithers aimlessly but always it has known
it is the glue and catalyst that joins two opposites …
when it’s finished eating berries.

Today, tomorrow; who can say when berries lose their hold
and appear as useless fodder to the knowing wise
but soon, in loosely woven terms, soul rises to the challenge
and charges through the undergrowth like a bull in a stampede.

Up the mountain, down again, free-falling into heart
like a drunken whirling dervish granted freedom of the city
until confined and recompensed by movement either end
that keeps it focused on the chore of bringing all together.

Perhaps it suffocates on mind’s overbearing logic,
perhaps it drowns in water of heart’s pathetic tears,
but it’s growing and evolving into an octopus
with tentacles a-plenty to stretch and reach and feed
on the goodness of both.

Nourished by the mind, sustained by the heart,
and soul has overcome a destructive berry addiction
to finally stand as master of opposing forces …
and that for ease of reference is simply called “new life”.

Awesome write full of understanding and wisdom, Helen.  Jaw dropping a little here!  So that's what it's called....berry picking...lol...and a berry addiction.  No really, how well and simply (but so deeply) said!  Saving it, of course.   .....jo

Helen, this was like reading about a milestone of life....

this....

Up the mountain, down again, free-falling into heart
like a drunken whirling dervish granted freedom of the city
until confined and recompensed by movement either end
that keeps it focused on the chore of bringing all together.

loved the images you projected here, powerfully written and felt.

Thank you
