She sits at the dresser and stares in the mirror
Softly crying so no one will hear her
She talks to herself of the dreams of a child
The days of her youth when she was free and wild

The years have passed her, she feels so old
These feelings she’s lived with and never told
He stands at the doorway, quietly listening
And sees her tears falling and glistening

He walks up behind her, puts his hands on her shoulders
And whispers the words that he’s never told her
“You sing to my heart with a voice unmistaken
With love you have given and never taken”

“The kids you have raised with little help from me
That’s why you’re the first one they want to see
In my eyes I know, you’re a beautiful thing
Grace and elegance you always bring”

“You light up the darkness in my life
It’s the reason I asked you to be my wife
So don’t speak of youth and days gone by
Think of all that you’ve done, never ask why”

“You’re such a good woman with so much to give
Without you here, I couldn’t live”
She stands up to face him, more tears in her eyes
Embracing so tightly, he starts to cry

She never again thought of dreams from her youth
The life she had lived bore her truth
Of love for her children, her husband adored
She could never have asked any greater reward.
