A Canary Watches The Passing of the Sun

In the room the table
is heavy
legs folded and tucked

The canary sings in its center
he tells the sun the time
singing to the yellow sash of the eastern curtain
that watches the apple tree
how drenched with fruit he sees for certain

I have no lover but warble true says bird
Reflecting to the dark side of the pond
I hold the evening still within is the reply
the frogs den and the fish cease swim
in my shadow water’s song
come along with me and see your own reflection
cast in prisms care the beauty is love’s perfection

Just as morning ends and hits cement with hot
the trees dance away the sky
leaving you and I in dappled light
easing over the roof to night

The fire takes the air in front
and sparks it into the crystals slant
across the room as if in dance
canary sings to lights like fairies
laced with his sweetest vocabulary
forgeting for now the pond out back
for in the pond he sees his lack

Sun dares to dip behind the traces
palm soldiers tall with headdress faces
erect not bothered by the passing
movement of the wind fan dancing
the clouds now all swept into place
as if a child’s crayon traced
the colors of the human spectrum
until they mix in genuflection
----
In memory of the sunny place this sweet bird had in my life.  8-22-03

Line after line
to capture time,
again, and again,
just to hear
the songbird sing...

You do keep memories
so precious....

Even though this was inspired by loss... you've captured the joy he brought to life. Magnificent write!!

And your picture is great! *S*

So beautiful that it humbles.  My son had a bird, and although very mean to her cage mates actually never allowing any of them to live, she sang with such beauty that I simply loved that darn bird.  She died about six months ago and I have not moved her cage to this day...I miss her singing so, and I hear it in my mind almost every time I walk by it.  I didn't think I would ever keep a caged bird again as there is something so sad about that, but on  the other hand, she had a better life with us than she would have had in the pet shop....and she would have probably killed even more cell mates there.  (Hope you don't think this post is too strange...just got to waundering, I guess.)  *hugs*...jo

I remember your distress, when this happened....and after this time, I can say I do finally understand.

At the time, I believe I said something that's still true -- that while some of us count and do simple math, and a few even learn the blinding alleys of algebra....you'd written calculus with this poem. I still think that.

This is very special.  Birds are unique creatures with which to have a relationship.  Their connections to the Earth are older than humans'.

And when you rhyme, you are divine!

(I love how you fit fairies with vocabulary)

Adorable pic, too, lady!

(and btw, you are divine all the time, but you truly do some interesting things when you rhyme)

*hugs*

and let me know how the reading is coming.

how very cool is that thought and image!
wonderful!

How about me not blaming you for everything
How about me enjoying the moment for once
How about how good it feels to finally forgive you

My sobs for you, Martie and iliana and both of your much loved birds.  May the birds have met my horse in Heaven.  His love of all creatures is legendary.
