"THE WEDDING GIFT"

The day arrived and there we were just like it all was planned
We stood in front of all our friends together hand in hand
As we repeated every word the preacher had us say
Emotions were extremely high yes it's our Wedding Day

We didn't plan a honeymoon and hoped that no-one knew
Between us both we barely had enough to say "I Do"
When every vow had been complete and all was said and done
The preacher then presented us as now becoming one

We soon discovered all our friends had made a wedding cake
With gifts and money for a trip they knew we couldn't take
So touched by all their thoughtfulness of what they did that day
They filled a need yet didn't take our dignity away

This trip had been the very first of all the dreams we had
For both of us to finally meet the other's mom and dad
The preacher said a special prayer before our trip began
Each one stood in agreement, as they held each others hand

Soon we were gone and Momma was the first one we would see
She lives with her new husband in the hills of Tennessee
Then further north to Michigan where both of them reside
His parents were so glad to meet their only son’s new bride

The last stop made our dream complete and on that final day
We shared a place so wonderful it took our breath away
The Appalachian Mountains were as far as you could see
Beneath the West Virginia skies was where my dad would be

As we drove through the iron gates sweet jasmine filled the air
My daddy's yard is beautiful he has perpetual care
I showed my husband where we laid my dad to rest that day
As I tried not to cry but then my heart got in the way

The moment that I saw his name reality set in
This "Cager Howard" "Veteran" would not come home again
Through tears I walked back to the car but when I turned around
My husband didn't follow me he's sitting on the ground

I watched him at my daddy's grave as he sat at his feet
All by himself to face the one he never got to meet
My husband started talking yet I couldn't hear a word
That conversation had to be the best I never heard

I know that when the time is right they'll meet eventually
For now this is the closest that the two will ever be
Then it was time to go back home and live as man and wife
This sweet foundation gave us strength to build our brand new life

It's going on eleven years since all of that took place
But it seems like just yesterday each time I see his face
The memory of him sitting there will live until I die
He gave his bride "THE WEDDING GIFT" that money couldn't buy

Dear TnDeer, you have the gift of being a fine raconteur ~ and you do it poetically and with grace.

An exceptionally moving piece of writing from both your soul and heart.

Love & Light,
EA

Thank You both so much,
I don't think I've ever had such wonderful compliments anywhere as I do here. Even though I don't expect them or even feel I deserve them. I give the credit to God for giving me a way to see a little differently than some and I'm thankful that I can.
Also, Thank You for the very sweet welcome.
God Bless!

Thank You P.S.
This one was (I'd have to say) one of the most difficult ones I've done. Yet anything I have written concerning my dad has been very hard since his death. It seems to capture a type of passion though which is what I feel poetry is all about. We were extremely close and I miss him terribly. He passed away in 1983 but it still seems like yesterday to me.
So, I thank you and the others from the bottom of my heart for your comments.
God Bless!

Freda, I understand about the death of a parent. I lost my mom in 1980 to suicide brought on by illness.

I still have a heavy heart, 25 years later.

I do appreciate the wonderful compliments but they go to the true writer, God.

Ms. P. S.
You are so right about a parents death, especially when it's the one you're closest to. Three of us are left now but I sometimes feel very alone so it's excellent therapy to write about my dad. My mom and sister can't really understand that or me now but I'm thankful they have each other and pray they enjoy every minute together.
Thank You All Again and God Bless!

Ms. P. S.
Thank You, I actually began writing in 1991 when my husband was in Saudi (1st. Gulf War) and I became disabled right before he left. After working for so many yrs. I suddenly was alone and felt useless until one night I woke up with all these words in my head. I started writing them down and that night, after about 4 hrs. I wrote my first poem which was "Daddy." Just as you have read it here was how it was written that night. It was amazing and I've been writing since then.
Thank You Again for your kindness and God Bless!
