Heavenly resemblance

In the dark I sit outside, among the sunflowers
I planted, beside the car that takes me
to the job that pays a salary so that I can
eat and sleep in the house that is the sole witness
as I look heavenward and cry
who Lord, am I?

Laughter looks for me and finds me
often enough to keep me from weeping
away the days but who it is that looks back
from behind my brown eyes, I do not know-
in there is she and outside is me.

Anger and grief have raged both within and without;
I have been touched by love and learned patience,
worn disillusion and weariness and I have kept on
trying, but none nor all of these
define me.

A mother, a wife, a friend
all of these am I, but they are
just parts it seems, independent of the whole
for there are deeper parts of me
that ache for definition.

Shall I claim or blame likeness to my mother?
my sister? my daughter? the father I do not know
nor have seen? Perhaps instead of misplaced,
I shall think myself to be a work in progress
and the answer I seek is not in who I am
but whose I am –

By faith and Grace I have been re-birthed
a child of God; I pray and hope when I finally find
who I turn out to be, that I bear
a strong family resemblance.

There's no doubt in my mind of that strong family resemblance, dear friend... and you continue to step nearer... reflecting more goodness with each inch covered. You're beautiful... and so is this. *S*

OhSweetJellyGirl~

This is just the loveliest of the lovely~

I could have easily copied the entire piece ... for I found the beauty of your thoughts soooooo touching~

I have often wondered at the many mes that live inside this shell...
but I've never put it as succinctly as you have.

See why I keep you as a favorite?

Yes, there most assuredly is a heavenly family resemblance.

You write ~ we read ~ you touch ~ we feel...

Jellybeans....I'm glad this came back up so I could read it, for it touched me a great deal, as your poems always do.

"for there are deeper parts of me
that ache for definition."

Every time you write a poem, you define your strength, beauty and character...that is why I read you.
