Never close enough

The smell
of freshly cut grass
carries me far back
to a place
that few
even know exsists,
it's there
that I recall
moments on your lap
laughing and giggling
cause you let me steer
that old
John Deere Tractor

We were friends
way back then
I hadn't rebelled
and you hadn't
seen her in me yet
even though
she's mom,
and you still
love her
it was then
that our troubles came
when you could
see that flash
of green in my eyes
just like hers
and long brown
hair that reminded
you of the mistakes
that you had made
when she was yours
and we
were a family

I can remember
wishing that I
didn't remind
you of her, and
all that you had lost
I wanted to
hold your broken
heart - just a kid
wanting to
make the grown-up things
right, because I seen
the tears in your eyes
when -

They played Elvis
singing softly
'You were always on my mind'
so many things you
never told her
and so many things
you never done

It's been a long time
since I heard that
tune on the radio
and then today
we drove to the
outskirts of town
just to get away
and there I saw

A little girl
on her daddies lap
cutting grass
and she was laughing
and he was proud,
and then
as the tears began
to roll
Elvis came on
the radio

And I cried

Remembering when
we were us -
and we were friends
long before
you hated seeing her
in my eyes.

Yea, way back then.

I may hate myself in the morning - but I'm gonna love you tonight

Dear Tima, this is an extremely touching, most beautifully written poem.

...  there are such deep emotions flowing right from your pen to the reader's heart.

And there is a coincidence ... just yesterday evening I had flashes from the past, and the memory actually came along on an Elvis Presley song ... and I might write something about that too.

Love,
Margherita

~ your Mom must be as beautiful as you are...

I was deeply moved by the emotions expressed in this touching piece of poetry from your heart.

This brought the sting of tears...
because the truth of it wrings...
