From this ditch
Filled with mud
Blood
And shattered flesh
I write:  My Dear Marie,

Today, My Love,
The sky was blue . . .

And what do you know,
I saw then heard
A yellow bird

Singing in the branches
Of a slaughtered tree

The post of a warrior
in the middle of
destruction,
still, letting his love
know only of hope,
starkly.

Well done, John
