Memorial Day 2005 broke cool and grey,
A perfect day, for a 6K, Bolder Boulder.
We all began in our own little worlds,
You and Scott for a righteous work-out ride,
Chandler to drive his friend to the big race,
And me to station chores, wastebaskets and floors.
Little did we know that we were about to become
Memorial Day Walking Wounded.

When you and Scott met a dozing Chandler,
Who would have thought, what are the odds,
that we would already be in the Engine,
heading your way in search of breakfast.
Our response time…incredibly short!
I, hot on the heals of my Paramedic,
running lists in my head: Airway, Breathing,
Circulation, Deficiencies, Environment,
C-Spine, Hemorrhage Control, Splinting…
My medic looked up, I see his face, his eyes,
the shake of the head, the anguished
gut-wrenching scream from across the road,
“OH GOD, NOOOOOOOO”!
We lost Scott
and we were changed.
We became Memorial Day Walking Wounded.

I turned to care for you and our eyes met.
You were uninjured but I could see your wound.
Could you see mine?
The wound expanded from the scene,
like ripple-rings in a pond, touching:
Your wife, his bride, parents, siblings, friends,
A high school class, runners in the big race…
we were all affected in some way…wounded.
I wish I knew why BAD things
happen to GOOD people, but I don’t.
I also wish it were not so.
I carry my wound as I climb back on the Engine.
I pray I see you back on your bicycle!
We the Memorial Day Walking Wounded.

You do not walk alone, ma chere...and I know your heart.  Painfully wonderful.

Thank you both...I know this is NOT an easy thing to respond to.  Certainly this is NOT the norm but real life just the same.

I met him again today at our open house.  He, his wife, and his kids came to say, thank you.  I found we needed to see him as much as he needed to see us.  Much hugs, a few tears...lots of healing.

Thank you again!
