Promises Kept
~*Marge Tindal*~

She whispered, "I’m going to love you foreverly."

He sighed, "My darling, just how long will that be?"

She began …

"Until time as we know it
slips away,
I’m going to love you foreverly,
foreverly and then one more day"

"Until the rain ceases to course down the mountain,
on it’s way to the rivers and streams,
until the ocean no longer waves
to the night of passing moonbeams."

"I’m going to love you foreverly,
that’s one day past eternity …
I’m going to love you,
Oh yes, I’m going to love you …
My darling, foreverly."

Years passed … once more he asked,

"My darling, just how long will it be
that you will still love me …
the way that you’ve loved me,
for all of these years in cherished memories?"

She caressed him with a smile, saying,

"Even after all of the children are grown and gone
I’m still going to love you foreverly,
Through all of the tears, the joys, the fears …
I’ll be with you past eternity."

In the twinkling of an eye it seemed
the twilight of their years came to be …
the silver of the ages came to lay their heads
and still at night he wondered at the words she had said

So he asked …

"Darling, do you remember
the promise that you made,
to love me foreverly,
foreverly and one more day?"

She sighed …

"My love, of course I remember
all of the promises I’ve made.
I will always show you my undying love
foreverly and then one more day."

A question in his eyes
caused her to pause and touch his cheek
With gentle concern she wondered
if there was something of which he couldn’t yet speak
or
did he know ?

With head bowed low
in the voice she’d come to know
He finally spoke in halting speech,
fear cloaked his every word,
she breathed in his fear, as he held her near …
these are the words she heard him say …

"Through the years we’ve held no secrets
no reason our thoughts to regret,
you have loved me tenderly
with a love I’ll never forget"

Then the tear slipped,
finding it’s way to his cheek
It was all he could do to maintain
enough composure to even speak

But … the time had come …

"I need to share some news with you
that I’d rather I didn’t have to say.
But, I’ve not much time left here with you
for I will be going away."

Fear clutched her heart,
But try as she might, she could not speak
she reached up and gently brushed
the tear from his cheek …

He clasped her hand,
Held it so tight
She knew … yes, she knew
this was something she couldn’t make all right

His voice raspy with emotion
he stammered to continue,

"The doctor’s say I’ve not much time
before I have to go …
It’s something they can’t fix …
I now need you to know."

"For all these years that you’ve cared for me,
not once did I ever realize
that I might be the first to go
over to the other side."

"So it’s time for me to release you
from the tender promises made …
I guess there isn’t a foreverly after all …
no foreverly and one more day."

Pressed together as one heartbeat
they cried …

She pressed her strength upon him
Willing it to be that he not know
the frailty of her very own health
shouldered so that it wouldn’t show
she had not long herself … but
could not bring herself to say
any more than …

"Sweetheart, I will still love you
foreverly and one more day."
"When you are ready to leave this earth,
leave this life as we know it to be …
at the gates of Eternity …I can promise
I will be waiting for thee."

They sought the comfort of one another
trying so hard to be brave
He, in release of tears
She, in silent reflection of what would come

Days, weeks, months in passing,
each one there for the other
Neither knowing … nor wanting to know
just when it might end

The children summoned, came
trying to make sense of it all
not ready for the loss of parental love
not yet … please, not yet

He slipped into a world of no longer knowing
She could only watch and weep
Then in one moment of tender …
he reached for her hand in his state of sleep

Said,

"It’s okay, my darling …
before the morning sun shall rise,
I will go breathless …
taking all the sweet promises
of all the years … with me."
"If it’s okay with you …
I will wait for you foreverly …
foreverly and one more day."

She sighed the sigh of knowing
that all had been done
Laid down beside him, clasped his hand
life as she knew it stopped living her
her own journey had begun

He kept his promise …
on the rise of morning sun
he was gone

Ah, but as his spirit soared on high
He could not believe his eyes
There … there at the beautiful gate of Eternity
she gracefully waited …

"See,my love …
promises made ... are promises kept."

~*When the heart grieves over what it has lost,
the spirit rejoices over what it has left.

Friends~
I appreciate each kind comment~

I often tell you all that I know not where the words come from
(I am merely 'receiver') ...
This one hitched a ride home on my shoulder ... with an insistent muse commanding it to be penned~
When it circles 'round and an email like this one comes to me ... I know the 'why' of it~
quote:
Dear  Marge,

You will never know what this poem meant to me. I met the love of my life in  the sixth grade, we married when she turned nineteen in March , we married the next  month.  We are working toward  51 years.

She is in  the terminal stages of Lupus and the "Promises Kept" was talking to my Sweetie and me.

May the Lord and King of Heaven   bless and keep you!

Love in His Name

Bob G
To share with others is why I write~

So I *gift* this poignant penning to Bob and his Sweetie~

Pat/Nan/Trish -
... thank you for your encouraging 'preview' comments~<))><

And Doreen ... thank you for your sweet note on this one~

I feel so blessed to be a giver of words~

Dear Marge:  Thanks for sharing this response to your poem!  How rewarding for you to have this personal touch added to the story you penned. Almost like you were clairvoyant! (Maybe you are!)

“Foreverly”  ~ you have given me a new word, Marge…  One filled with such emotion that only your poem does it justice.

Beautifully written, a poem that should be shared in generations and live in the hearts ~ foreverly and a day…

Marge, this was as tender as it gets.  I actually knew a couple that left the same time like this and have heard it happens frequently.  Beautiful, lovefilled write.   ....jo

I have read this a few days ago and was so deeply touched, but I could not reply in that moment.
Now I came back and went through this sensitive piece once again ... yes I believe this does happen quite often. When two are really ONE.
Such deep emotions, beautifully penned!

Love and hugs.

Extraordinary, Marge! I loved it and can see why you pointed me to this poem of yours after you read mine... quite similiar, indeed... yet the subtle difference show both of our styles.

Thank you for taking me on your journey.

Marge/sis....I don't know why my name isn't here already in reply...I'm gonna remedy that now.  How you touch my heart with this poem...we just never know when a loved one will be gone from this life....and if we do, I think it's a lucky thing to be able to express all that this poem showed, of love.
