Feeling so the might of majestic constellations
a river pushes on towards the raging sea
like vibrant energy runs forward on to love
in wait behind a time frame I’m not conscious of.

The river has no mate or cohabitating force
to encourage and inspire continued steadfastness
but always the knowing of ethereal commitments
keeps it ever flowing towards eventual freedom.

Another fall into the depths of its deepest wish
and it tumbles agitated and bereft of direction
round and round, up and down, like a circus clown
but the river doesn’t laugh behind life’s happy mask.

The noose of destiny like a punishment it seems
tightens considerably and the river cannot breathe.
“Release me”, it screams but the sun doesn’t care
and shoots its mocking rays into a heart dismayed.

So pauses the river in midstream cough and splutter
to swallow remembrances and regain its dignity
before assimilating the flow of present times
and moving on again like a puppet on a string.

Less now than once before a humbled river groans
and rocks back and forth uncertain where to go
and how to preserve its natural way of being
amidst life’s many bends and inconsistencies.

When a river meets the sea there’s a pause in history
so fractionally significant as to not be there at all
and the sea just keeps on rolling completely unaware
that once a river lived in its own amazing spotlight!

Thanks Dixie.  So you see, even rivers have a hard life - not just us.  I'm not sure if that makes me feel any better or not but ... oh, well, tomorrow's another day!

Helen

"The river has no mate or cohabitating force

but always the knowing of ethereal commitments
keeps it ever flowing towards eventual freedom"

It seems that there is a lesson here, from both the river, and you!  Thank you.

Thanks Jo and Martie for the read and for commenting.  Just a little mental pause down by the river side.

Dear Helen, your poetry is a reality check that flows so gracefully,
leading right to the heart of the matter!!

Such a beautiful soul you have, good poetess~
