Never close enough

Theres an old shoebox,
hidden among old clothes
in that over crowded closet
I call yesterdays wordrobe.

It's full of letters that
I never sent
they are all written
with love,
and regret.

I just don't have
the heart to send them,
though on nights
like these
I remember what
each and
everyone of them
say-

I should shake the dust
from that old box
and let the ghosts
out of my closet,
especially this one
I call a mind.

But, the words -
they are etched into
my heart,
and won't ever go away
not even first class mail
can kill the
pain that is folded there.

I have been running
from those memories
for so long now
that if I stop
I know they will
fall in
like a ton of bricks.

No thank you,
I will just keep
them there...
to gather dust,
and yellow with time -
'cause time is all
there really is
for bones like these.

They make the loudest
undeniable noise
on nights like this -
when all I can hear
are my thoughts
pumping, pounding
deafening to the ear.

Some call it denial
but I have never denied
the pain
that those memories
cause me
when without
conscious choice
I choose to remember.

That's the funny thing
about writing it on paper
it doesn't make it
hurt less,
or ache more
it just puts it out there
so that the ones
that never knew you
finally have the chance
to see.

Yeah,
on nights like these
I recall that old box
up there
hidden-
just like
me.

I may hate myself in the morning - but I'm gonna love you tonight

this was pure charm, in describing life's echoes...those militant little buggers that even advil cannot abolish...tremendous
