Listening to every heart

The Mother's Day Gift

A cigar box, painted black
with yellow and pink roses, and green leaves
in childish scrawl
a place for all of your treasures;
made with only you in mind,
made with my hands,
made with my love,
to sit on your windowsill
in the shadows of the peace roses.

I thought you would ooh and ahh,
but once placed in your hands,
it did not match the gift of love
I had held for you
in my mind.

Years and years went by ~
I know there were other gifts given
on this special day
to honor you,
but I don't remember them.

Practical gifts, but nothing from the heart,
like the cigar box.

Thirteen years ago, Mom
we both knew
it was probably your last Mother's Day
here;

we were right.

I only wish I knew, Mom,
where that old cigar box was,
for all of my love for you is in it,
and I would treasure it
with all my heart.

Thirteen years ago I told you
I loved you…
I know my voice held the words differently
because we both knew
it would be the last time
I could say to you those three words,
and I wanted you to hear them
with your heart.

~~~~~
I miss you.
Happy Mother's Day.
A beautiful tribute, to all mothers...and to the mother of one beautiful poet.
I remember two gifts I gave my mother.  The first was in second grade.  The class painted Dad's Root Beer bottles yellow and added a decal plus a corked spray top.  It was a sprinkler used by every woman to iron clothes.  The second was my first Christmas in the Navy when I sent her a wooden "Story of the Dogwood."  Both were so modest, but had such meaning to her.  Thank you for the memories...and for my thoughts of her.  KJ
This is so lovely, Sunshiney One... It would have touched me even if I hadn't made one of those cigar boxes, too... once upon a time. *S*
  happy mothers day sunshin~
    this was beautiful~
       my mom wasnt there
but when my son was in 2nd grade, he made me a pair  of earings, (not pierced back then) and  he glued tiny sea shells on them  that he had found  and saved for his        pockets  ( boys lol)   i still have them         and touch them almost every day.
My spirit will rise
above the sea~
There will be no drowning
of my soul or me~
In this precious peace, you already have found that cigar box, within...and given two fold...this was a splendid reminder to me...to cherish my mom...while she's still here...and not take one second for granted.
Hugs to you, for this tremendous rememberance from your heart of treasures...
