Once
Upon a time
Back in
69
There were these two guys
And a grenade . . .

And where were you
When I was
South
Of Da Nang

Carrying
A locked and loaded
Fully automatic
Blow you . . . .away

Where was I?...protesting to stop that war, the one my husband had to fight even though he believed it was wrong. He went to DaNang.

K,

I remembered it as DaNang as well
But I wasn’t sure.
It’s been a long time . . .

Thanks for reading.

John

P.S.

REMEMBER THEM

If you are able,
save for them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for places they can no longer go.

Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may
or may not have always.

Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.

And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.

the residue of that war...will always remain in my life including the ending of a long marriage.
