Li Yu - Corn Poppy

When will there be an end to spring flowers and autumn moon,
how many things there were are known?
Again by the small attic there were easterly last night,
impossible to look back the old country in the moonlight.

Still there should be the buildings of carved stones and jade,
the only thing has ever changed is the emperor's face.
If ever asked how much one could have sorrow,
just look at the waters of the river in continuous flow.

Li Yu, 937-978, the emperor of southern Tang dynasty. After the conquer by Song dynasty, he become a prisoner, then later died of poison. Most of his poems were written during the time as a prisoner in reflecting this deep pain and sorrow of losing his own dynasty as an emperor. His poems put great details in description with refined words and musical harmony. He started a new era in Chinese poetry and is undoubtedly one of the most important poets in Chinese history.
