Evolution, you see

How the bough bends but it doesn’t break
when history pulls both ends in together
and fashions a knot of effort not love
and endeavour instead of …
inherent desire.

So sways a tree in the wind of dis-ease
with roots in the sand of an evil land
clutching and grabbing at survival tools
like a fool in a pool of loneliness.

But not a fish to swim speedy and sure
trees merely stand cool and withdrawn
like wisdom awaiting those who would know
stands willingly on the sidelines of soul.

My arms are too short; evolution, you see
loses soul in the process of material growth
and this trickster, life, binds faith in a bag
and ties it all up with the comfort of gold.

And I would step out if younger and bold
and hold my soul like a treasure untold
if not for the bones threatening to break
in the soon, too soon, approach of old age.

Wise are the old to know when to fold
but a soul un-swayed stands in love always
because on the sidelines of this lowly life
wisdom attests to the fact of no death.

Helen...i liked the choice of words here...there is a bitterness..an uncomfortable acceptance of what may be happening...you use metaphor to create what you are really feeling...but dress it up in borrowed clothes to describe it...enjoyed..
