The “homeless” – who are they?
Are they those who “fall through the cracks”
of a System gone awry?
Victims of those in power
who deny them access to the welfare net?
Are they the proverbial “too-lazy’s”
who won’t look for a job or work for pay?

These are stock assumptions: I don’t buy ‘em.
These individuals are not as “homeless”
as they appear to be outwardly.
They have a very real, necessary purpose
especially in the richest nation of the world.

Though they may be blissfully unaware
of the status I’m about to confer upon them,
this is who they are:
The Survivors.
Yes, they are the ones who will survive,
pass into the shadows for a time,
refined by the fire that will rage over this world
and emerge from the ashes as they mostly do
each and every day in the city.

When the nation and her systems collapse,
It won’t be those safely installed
in their underground bunkers and caves
who will rise to plunder another day –
for these will go stark raving mad,
stuck with their darkened thoughts
tread-milling their darkest moments
in their darkened pits below the earth.

After the end,
In the beginning
it will be the homeless
who will inherit the earth.

To each according to his need.

This IS true to a certain degree, but for my husband who moved out and turned homeless. He did it purely for attention and "yes" he is lazy and doesn't want to work.

Windwalker

I spent years working with the homeless

What needs to be done is politics

I write poems on politics but they have to be to the point

By a rant people can be turned off and this is a fact of life not choice by anyone since getting people off the street has no allure to a politician and in poetry no allure to a mindset that allows 1 minute per poem, doesn't comment twice on poems they can see and only works on the first 25.

I'll use my third poem for the day on how I think it might have been.

No doubt this is an explosive topic, and I read your rendering here a few times through.

Change to our way of thinking as human beings is gravely needed.  True.
I like the reference to survivors...yet, as I have read many of your strongest statements over several poems...I can only disagree with one part.

There is rarely a black and white solution to anything. Each victim has his or her story.  Each of us has a right to think and feel as we do.

Times are not hospitable to the ill of mind or the fane of heart.  Politics alone will not end the suffering of homelessness.  In fact, living on the land has been historically man's deepest and truest home.

The issues that people face today erode their self esteem and dispell their inherent nobility.  If apathy is a crack to fall through, then we are all at the precipice of a bottomless pit.  Care for the elderly, care for the ill, care for less fortunate...single parents with children, how we deal with criminal behavior, and how we deal with each other in our daily lives...it is all part and parcel of the problem.  Even to the degree of how we think of each other and ourselves in our daily relationships.

As a people, human beings must find within themselves the courage to reach out with open arms to a purer life based on self reliance, living their beliefs of what is right and what is wrong, and giving more in terms of understanding, compassion and support to each other.  Victim mentality is not a friend, nor is it an excuse.

This is a lofty goal, but more basic than any politics or extreme cultural aspect...this is about chosing how we live, and how we do not.
Each of us has that choice before us, and some realize that we do.

Always enjoy the fire you fan, Windwalker.
