EARTH DAY

A Senator thought, “Earth Day”
That a President empowered
It was the germ of the idea
That ultimately flowered.

An idea by Gaylord Nelson
Back in Nineteen sixty-two
Who asked the Kennedy’s about it
And the Brothers liked it too.

The President began a tour
In Nineteen sixty-three
To put it on the agenda
But, it wasn’t meant to be.

Nelson didn’t let it die
With the assassination
He knew that people cared
All across this Great Nation.

There were demonstrations
Against the War and other things
So at a conference in Seattle
Nelson said, he’d pull some strings.

Springing up from the Grassroots
In the Spring of Seventy
A demonstration for Nature
And Nationwide Conservancy.

Our Earth’s Environment
Was finally placed on the table
And People everywhere
Began to do what they were able.

Now celebrated round the World
As more People learn and see
If we don’t take care of it
Our World will someday cease to be.

Nice write, Abe.
I enjoyed the short history lesson. It's too bad we left Kyoto sitting on the table, and that Earth Day has become just another holiday, just like the holy days.

Thank you for the powerful reminder. We can't say it too often.

(sad sigh) I find it very unfortunate that the Kyoto Protocol has been rejected here, primarily because it's more than just a call in limiting emissions levels to 1990 levels, it's also symbolic of what I truly believe is one of the greatest internation relations issues out there, and with the U.S divided from much of the rest of the world from it is strikingly similar to the world and the war in Iraq! (sad sigh) My feel on how this administration perceives the Kyoto Protocol is that they actually see it as a political move to slow down the U.S economy because, after all, though only 4% of the world population lives here, 35% of the world's natural resources burn here, so understandably our economy runs heavily on these fuels. Then there's also what I do believe is the main problem with the protocol, where China and India are excluded because they're developing countries, and with the way U.S and China have lukewarm relations as it is, it may strike them as political in seeing China moves ahead while we're stuck paying! (sad sigh) This is undoubtedly the worst environmental administration we've ever had, and global warming is a huge problem we must face, yet corporations like ExxonMobil continue to fund skeptics to deny the mountains of findings! (sigh) God Bless You for speaking out here, dearest friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Abe, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
