These playing fields
appear to me overgrown,
and yet somehow still
the same as in my youth,
when always fleet of foot,
slick and swift,
I raced laughing
past the pitfalls,
beyond deadfalls,
the easy opportunities
all seeming endless
where today on these same trails
I am amongst the halt and lame.

Hot breath
riffles the tall grass
lining these stalking trails,
just a hint
of sound above the gentle breeze,
I sense more than feel
the draw of claws flexed
time and time again.

Love can be a flower
soft scented for the mind,
a feather floating
giving flight to locked down souls,
love can be a comfort,
bluff shield against the cold of age,
a measure on which
the lost may choose to gauge their worth;
this day it is a predator
bold and hungry on the prowl,
and I am on the water path
heart leaping to my throat.

Oh wow..this last stanza builds so powerfully.
Love the ending..felt as though my heart was in my throat.
Excellent write, much enjoyed.

But into my heart
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul

I don't know what to think.
I'm stuck in this strange feeling of
wonderment
the words you spoke seem so far beyond
me
I'm stuck in my youth and I can't understand you...
I felt the power though...
I know it means much to you.

Knowing when to fold is one thing, knowing when to hold is better. You write as one who knows both.

Thank you all very much for reading and taking time to comment.  I never seem to have the time I need to do both read others' poetry and reply to others' thoughts on mine.  Most times I would rather read poetry, but I really do appreciate your thoughts.

*gulp*

uh huh.

If I could sit in a cafe' surrounded by you and a few others on this site..I would be content just to listen with eyes closed and absorb all the trueness.

This may be trite, but it is ever so true, youth is wasted on the young.

If only we knew then what we know now.

Another fine spill from thy quill, sire.

Yes, it can be all those things, even though most choose to see it only one way.  Your poem is enlightening.
