Scattered Love & Things

The pale dawn I wear on my face today
as I'm thinking about you, so far away
this lonesome blue city feels empty to me
as I'm staring at the sun streaming through a yellow kite stuck in a tree

There's a songwriter sleeping inside me
and I'm writing about your eyes of summer green
napkin poetry and newspaper songs
and you've been staring at me through these broken rhymes for so long

I'm looking through the low clouds of morning
tracing a flight path to you
I'm picking up all my scattered love and things
hoping this love will breeze right through you
and back to me

Your perfect eyes you wear like a stoplight
you wear me out, you take me out tonight
this wistful blue city feels open to me
as I'm staring at the moon hanging on the branch of a cranberry tree

I'm looking through the glowing clouds of evening
tracing the shadows right through
I'm mapping out all my scattered love and things
things that will lead this love back to you
and right through me

You left me and now I'm paying for your crimes
but I've yet to pay them all off
stormclouds may hang on me sometimes
but someday I'll shake them off

I'm still trying to be John Lennon
you're still trying my patience
your words cut through me again and again
but I'm still giving you a chance

There's a typewriter somewhere inside you
where I'm writing about my futile tries to keep you
bent leaf sonnets and tarot readings
and I've been starting at you through these broken aluminum wings

Picking up your scattered love and things
things like guitar strings and your charms
thinking of the wonder that tomorrow brings
when I fall back, just like a housecat, into your cozy loving arms
don't breeze right through me
as I come back to you
