Aftermath

His skin is sinking
like a lost boy I hold it
singing all the time
I feel the fragile bones beneath
wearing his muscles on my shoulders
I walk upright and balance the heft and flow
of his fast heart
the rhythm lives I tell him
dance with me to its song

Middle road, I would think
where life ebbs and flows,
and the dance is sought,
though feet can't be bought,
and new shoes go
without scuff.

Hold on, dear, hold on...

the reassurance lingers like
old time chimes in the heart.

I have been carried.....and I carry. The ache is the same.

Thank you for showing me that there are others who can feel it too. I hope yours never becomes a thing you cannot bear alone....or that you have to.

You have written of several things, the feeling of empathy, the shouldering of another's burdon, the strength of the self.
Wonderful rendering Martie

Thank you for your replies....Barry...this is about my husband and his war with cancer.  I fight too, during and now, after....because it takes much, but it also gave him something...his life back, after thinking he might die...I dance to the beat of his heart!  See?

In so few words, you've told a momentous story... of struggles together... of pain, both his and yours... and of the lighter than air feeling that return of hope can bring. *S* Beautiful and touching write!

Martie,

Been witnessing the same with my stepdad. Last Fall, he didn't think he'd live to see his 82nd birthday (he has skin cancer that's metastisized), but thanks to some good doctors and a blizt of radiation, he's still kickin'!

It was great to celebrate his last birthday: he ate almost an entire prime rib (after eating very little for months).

The process has aged him greatly, and the docs keep looking for signs of the cancer's return, but he's very greatful to have had this extra time (and so are we).

I love your new picture, by the way -- you look young and happy!

Keep up the faith.

Sometimes we grow so weary from the battle, having won, we wonder why we bothered the fight.

If not to dance, then for what?

You are so light on your words m'lady

And the dance continues..
may your steps grow lighter dear Martie.
Keeping you both in my prayers, Nancy.

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul

Such giving words you pen
Makes one ache for when
Times were simpler then
And touch meant forever.

Well done, m'dear.  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

Martie,

No greater picture could be painted.  The truest form of love, here, in a nutshell.
It takes special people to dance and sing after such a great toll is taken.  My brother-in-law, a dancer.
Thinking of the extraordinary attributes you and others must have...
Wonderful poetry, Martie.  I'm always in awe of how you capture essence.

Oh, Martie, it has been so very long since I visited here.

Your words dance, my friend, as always.

How delicately you pen the experience, the sorrow, and your loving courage!

I think of you both, and pray for you both.

I'm so sorry.  But so glad you are still writing!  What a gift!

This poem is the pulse of strength in the "aftermath" (well titled!) of survival.  There are so many stages to adjust to quickly in the process of something so painful...  Love is the rock that keeps us steady and your poem well reflects the beauty, beyond the pain..  Incredible write...  So very touching...
