An abandoned farmhouse:

Surroundings, tilted-bent
Walls and fields left fallow;
Lacking proper husbandry.

A dooryard fence:
Its pickets bent,
Top hinge broke-
Sagging,
Like its former owner-
Overburdened;
Spine out of line.

The windows of the house
Are shattered
Curtains wheeze in and out
Like nurturing dreams
That made exit,
And enter
Through a young mans eyes,
In warmer breezes
Of former springs.

But now only nightmares
Blow winter
Through broken lenses
And make a slow retreat
From the visionless
Head of the old farmer,

Now stuck on the pike
Of his banker.

This reminds me of a story...

they didn't lose the farm, but in a way they did. They turned the fields fallow for cattle, and my Dad joined the Navy and was a visitor, ever since.

wow.

You wrote it close to how he described though.

Such a sad and desperate scene, happening all around the country. I've often wondered about the people who left behind these empty houses, where they went, why they left.
A sensitive caring write, Ford.

Ford

such a stark reality....you've painted truth.  I was particularly caught by these words and the image they brought to me: "The windows of the house
Are shattered
Curtains wheeze in and out"  Very well done personification!!

Wonderful piece of work here Ford!
Very much enjoyed.

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul

Tears well in my heart for the loss of these dreams, once so vital and alive.  A struggle to accept the bitterness of the banker's pike. Brilliant ending Ford.

You vividly painted a very sad picture. I always bless a home such as this ~ as well as those you once inhabited it.

I am so glad that I didn't miss this piece. So many of our Ontario farmers are losing the old homesteads that have been passed down generation after generation. It is sad so sad. Just like your poem ... that I am keeing. Awesome. hugs, Chris
