1
Every night she did the same,
Brushed her hair with care
Two hundred times with silver brush,
Then hung her silken robe on the chair
Before climbing between satin sheets.
The initial chill did not remain
As warm thoughts warmed the bed,
Lights of night hid behind drapes plush,
Velvet hanging in maroon and red,
Rich colors just beyond her feet.
Sleep took her with no dreams at all
Till morning came with waking call.

2
Yesterday's paper, yesterday's news,
Found around blowing in the wind
She gathers papers to reuse,
Opens her coat and stuffs them in;
A turn in the alley off a street
She makes a paper pillow;
Then twists other around her feet;
then drifts in dreams till tomorrow.

3
Draw the blinds and pull the shade,
Fold down the bed the morning made,
Light the candles turn out the lights,
Sleeping in flannel from toes to head,
Get a quilt for the bottom of the bed,
Kneels and prays last words of night.
Snuffing out the flame the darkness covers,
She dreams of ways to be helping others.
