As if the moments of my smiles
were pieces of a puzzle that
you sent to me
in rattlebox

the memories

of chinese food
and the paper fortunes
played
kite tails on the tongues
of us
in total middle finger shout:

laughing

loving

dangerous

as if the lies that we rehearsed
were rhymes
consigned
by dermablend
dot around the scars
and wince:

-- I-will-not-remember-when --

"Watch!"

I never had a face

now let me paint one on...

"Say grace."

and fidget with the cross that plays
your mother's kitchen lights like guilt
blinded by the bodyflag
of fingers nervous at the throat
and trying not to tug the skirt
or check the buttons on our shirts

we knew...we blew
the smoke into
the air before
we hit the step
into the door
we licked and prayed
re-arranged
our hair
and dared
to tighten up the straps
of brat
spritzing on "Sweet Honesty"
proof of our virginity
crossing our sincerity
while counting all the penancing
of confession thanking God
in gratitude of Lord's recluse--
that no one ever seemed to care

enough to learn the truth

and light be unto you...
he said

The lord our life is light.

regret

we stomp the cigarettes

and blow the smoke away as though

we could wish the sin away

We cared    we cast
the salt of sea
as ribbons in the air unspooled
stuck upon our christening
fluttering
imaginings
of an implication's stare
the fool
muttering in amethyst
of the startle of red lips
and the way the people stared

when we ate the paper too

laughing the absurdity:

"I don't wanna know, do you?"

and nodding was our company
giggling complicity
for what was never said,

but we

fit the puzzle perfectly--

smoothing picture pleased

as we

touched the "accidentally"
as if the moment of our smile
were pieces of a puzzle fit:

laughing

loving

living it--

dangerous

we live and grieve

we're paper ribbons in the air

in total middle finger shout

enough to know the truth

and doubt:

"I don't wanna know, do you?"

Memory fragments fly though one's mind
at such a time, although I have never seen
it done in print in such a gripping way.
Write it out Karen..keep writing it out..
while we're holding you close.
Love ya, Nance.

Karen, you write with such sweet honesty...
and you have touched something in me that reminds me much of my two sisters and myself as we grew up...
I think I will go dab just a bit of sweet honesty on today and every time I catch the scent I will remember to send you a hug, just a little bit tighter each time.

Holding you in thought and hoping you know I (we) are all here for you.  ~tender hugs~

And she will always be there with you, within every nod, each moment when you acknowledge  truthfully... "I don't wanna know, do you?"

I remember Sweet Honesty....that was back in the day when Avon was the thing..

hmmm..

seems like all too soon our memories become all that is left and we hug them as if someone will snatch them away as well.

  love you.

thanks all for reading--this one IS a bit all over the place, sorta like my head right now. Hopefully I'll get my bearings soon, but I do appreciate your patience and ever generous replies.

I'm beginning to feel like I knew her to0, through your words, Serenity.  What an extraordinary groups of poems the last three have been... just wish they didn't hurt so much.  Love you, lady Karen.

Serenity,
"A bit all over the place?"  Here I thought it was very centered because it drilled down to my core and pried out a tear or two.
