il duce wears it well
nearly 70 years
since he first swaggered into the light
chin high
with the air of one
who knows everything
and nothing

the wear that eludes his face
lines ours

we humble subjects

Bro? Forgive my ignorance (and my head ain't right anyhow) but who is "il duce"?

I can't fully appreciate this without knowing. I feel dumb today.

I didn't know what il duce meant either, Karen...so I looked it up, and here:

'"il duce"

Benito MUSSOLINI

Fascist Dictator of Italy 1922-1943"

Good to learn something new today...what would I do without the internet?  But Raph, in light of that....what are you saying in your poem...I'm feeling dumb today, also!

thanks chris

sis, no worries i feel like that most days grins/hugs

Martie, you are correct.

Benito Mussolini adopted the Il Duce, as his de facto title in 1923, in an attempt to elevate himself as the nation's unquestioned supreme leader. Hitler did the same with the term Führer in 1934.

However, the poem isn't about Il Doofus. But a man(term used loosely)with similar tyrannical qualities, whose rule scarred others, but left him seemingly unscathed.

hoping that made sense lol, now i'm off hopefully to erase/or drown the image for today

hugs y'all

This is very well written, I like it, it says so much in so few words!

Il Duce...Wow, I haven't seen/heard those words since my grandfather died.  He told me stories about Mussolini when I was a kid (he would've appreciated your Il Doofus moniker...lol).  Wasn't it Benito who took his shoe off and beat it on the table at a United Nations meeting????
Cool write Raph...

thanks duncan, snd the deer's right, that was Khruschev. all mussolini did was look like curly from the stooges and make comical/sad gestures of machismo.

Oh, it was Khruschev.  Yep, that sounds familiar now.  Must've stored that little bit of info in some ailing brain cells...

Il dufus is astoundingly more genteel than the variant more commonly heard

I'm trying to discern the target of this -- but there are too many possibilities.  Which makes it great for having poetic legs in any future circumstances -- but a little vexing for those of us trying to read your mind

a classic twist Raph

vee vill CRUSH YOU!!!!!

sorry, just had to say it. i screamed and banged the shoe at a model UN conference when i was russia in sc. they ran a crisis scenario and off i went, in the process destroying what little decorum such student run proceedings had.

nice bit btw, not too often do we see something so rooted.

cheers.
